How many followers do you need to go LIVE on TikTok?

For most accounts the answer has long been 1,000 followers, plus being at least 18. TikTok varies the rules by region and changes them from time to time, so here is how to check what applies to you.

The usual requirements

  • Followers: the long-standing threshold is 1,000 followers. TikTok has tested lower thresholds in some markets and doesn’t always publish the number, so treat 1,000 as the common rule rather than a guarantee.
  • Age: you must be at least 18 to go LIVE. Receiving LIVE Gifts also requires being 18 or over.
  • Account standing: accounts with recent Community Guidelines violations can lose access to LIVE temporarily or permanently.

Some LIVE features have their own extra requirements, such as LIVE Subscription, which is invite-based and needs a larger following and regular streaming.

How to check whether you can go LIVE

  1. Open TikTok and tap the + button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Swipe along the options under the record button.
  3. If you see LIVE, you have access. If not, you don’t yet, or it’s restricted on your account.

On a computer, TikTok offers LIVE Studio and streaming-software keys to eligible creators, usually with stricter requirements than the phone app.

Why LIVE might be missing at 1,000 followers

  • Age. The account’s birthday says under 18.
  • Region. Requirements differ by country, and some regions have different thresholds.
  • Recent violations. Content removals or strikes can pause LIVE access.
  • Rollout delay. Access can take a little time to appear after you pass the threshold. Update the app and check again after a day or two.

If none of these apply, TikTok’s in-app support (Settings and privacy, Report a problem) is the place to ask.

Should you buy followers to unlock LIVE?

It’s the reason many people look at 1,000 follower packages, so here’s our honest view.

Bought followers do count towards your follower number, and an account a few hundred short of 1,000 that’s otherwise active can get there. But consider:

  • Nobody bought will watch your LIVE. A stream needs real viewers. If your videos don’t yet bring people, LIVE will be quiet whatever the follower count.
  • Drops can take you back under. If TikTok removes some of the followers, your count may fall below the threshold. Aim comfortably over the line rather than at it, and use the refill if it dips.
  • Gifts and monetisation get scrutiny. TikTok watches LIVE gifting closely. Accounts with obviously fake followers and real-money gifting attract more attention.
  • It’s against TikTok’s rules. Buying engagement breaches the Community Guidelines; read what TikTok does about it before deciding.

If you’re at 700 or 800 genuine followers with regular viewers, a small top-up is the kind of order that makes sense. If you’re at 50, the better move is to grow first. Our organic growth guide covers how.

Getting more from your first LIVE

  • Tell your followers in a video beforehand when you’ll be on.
  • Have a plan: a question to answer, something to make, a topic to talk through.
  • Greet people by name as they join; it keeps them around.
  • Go LIVE regularly at the same time so viewers can find you again.

Going LIVE from a computer

TikTok LIVE Studio is TikTok’s desktop app for streaming, popular with gamers and anyone who wants better audio or multiple camera sources. Access is separate from mobile LIVE and has historically required more: an established account and, in some cases, an invitation or a minimum follower count. Some creators can also get a stream key to use with streaming software. If you don’t see the option in TikTok’s desktop tools, it isn’t available to your account yet.

LIVE Gifts, briefly

Viewers can send virtual gifts during a LIVE, bought with coins, which creators can convert to rewards. You must be 18 or over to receive gifts, and TikTok sets conditions that change over time, so check the current terms in the app’s LIVE Center. We don’t estimate gift income in our money calculator because it depends almost entirely on your relationship with your viewers.

LIVE rules that catch people out

  • Age. Anyone under 18 must not appear as the host, and TikTok can end streams it believes are hosted by minors.
  • Static streams. TikTok discourages LIVEs that are just a still image or a looping video with nobody present.
  • Begging for gifts. Pressuring viewers for gifts, or staging gift battles in misleading ways, can break the rules.
  • Unoriginal content. Restreaming someone else’s broadcast or TV is a common reason streams are cut.

Breaking LIVE rules can cost you LIVE access for a period, even if your normal videos are unaffected.

Getting to 1,000 without buying

For most accounts the fastest route is a short series on one topic, posted consistently, with video replies to comments. Our organic growth guide has a four-week plan. If you’re close and the account is active, a small top-up gets you over the line; if you’re far away, the LIVE audience won’t be there yet anyway.

Checklist before your first stream

  1. Confirm the account’s age setting is 18+.
  2. Check account status for recent violations.
  3. Tap + and look for LIVE; update the app if it’s missing.
  4. Announce the time in a video a day ahead.
  5. Plan the first ten minutes so new viewers have something to stay for.

Once you’re live, TikTok shows viewer numbers, new followers and gifts in real time, and a summary afterwards in LIVE Center. Watch which moments brought new viewers in and do more of that next time.

Questions, answered

LIVE questions

How many followers do you need to go LIVE on TikTok?
The long-standing requirement is 1,000 followers, and you must be at least 18. TikTok varies this by region and changes it from time to time, so check whether the LIVE option appears when you tap +.
Can you go LIVE on TikTok without 1,000 followers?
In some regions and test groups TikTok has allowed lower thresholds. The only reliable way to know is to check the LIVE option in your app.
How old do you have to be to go LIVE on TikTok?
18 or over. Receiving LIVE Gifts also requires being at least 18.
Why can’t I go LIVE even though I have 1,000 followers?
Common reasons are the age on the account, your region’s rules, recent guideline violations, or a delay before access appears. Update the app and check again after a day or two.

If your account has access. LIVE Studio and stream keys have stricter requirements than mobile LIVE and aren’t available to every account.
What can get my LIVE access removed?
Breaking LIVE rules, such as streaming while under 18, static or unoriginal streams, or pressuring viewers for gifts, can lead to LIVE restrictions for a period.
